7 Steps to Properly Storing Your Holiday Decorations

Do you ever notice how everyone is eager to help decorate for the holidays, but when it’s time to clean up, the helpers disappear? Sometimes, it feels tempting just to toss everything into a big bag and call it a day. However, from experience, we know that leads to chaos and frustration later. Even home professionals dread organizing their decorations. But don’t worry, just follow these seven steps to store your holiday decorations and avoid the mess properly!

1. Don’t Go Solo

Find a partner or even hire someone. Large items like king-size tablecloths are best folded with a companion. Dividing the work, whether packing or putting things away, makes the process much easier and quicker.

2. Protect Your Decorations

You’ve likely collected your favorite decorations over the years. Whether they’re heirlooms or unique finds, take the time to pack them away safely. You’ll be glad you did.

3. Cut Down If You Can

Consider letting it go if you haven’t used a decoration in years. Donate items in good condition to charity thrift stores, shelters, or other nonprofits. This will also free up space for any new items you might want to pick up during after-Christmas sales.

4. Have a Storage Plan

Keep similar items together. Group outside decorations in bins and store soft goods like linens and stockings in separate containers. Pack all parts and decorations in one place if you have items that come apart, like an artificial Christmas tree.

5. Label Your Decorations

Once everything is in boxes or bins, use a permanent marker to label them specifically. For example, write “lights for the mantle” instead of just “lights.” Numbering boxes can also help, like “Lights for the garage, box 1 of 2.”

6. Don’t Scrimp on Organizational Supplies

Invest in sturdy containers to store your decorations. If you choose containers in traditional holiday colors, they’ll be easier to locate. Think blue and white for Chanukah or orange for Halloween.

7. Keep Notes

As you pack things away, take notes on what needs to be replaced or added. Keeping a list handy can help you take advantage of sales throughout the year, whether it’s a larger turkey platter or new light strings.

Following these steps ensures your holiday decorations are correctly stored and ready for next year. Happy organizing!
